Adagio for strings
For its new season, Ensemble Orchestral 41 offers an foray into the heart of classical music. This original program including works from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries is structured around three themes: surprise, folklore and emotion.
The astonishment is evident with the 2nd London symphony, known as “The Surprise” by Joseph Haydn with its new form for the 18th century. It is just as evident in the Symphony of Toys with its disconcerting effects and the use of original instruments.
If these two symphonies, innovative in their orchestrations, remain attached to the formal tradition, the Czech Suite by Antonin Dvorák is a folkloric reference and a perfect success. The originality of the Slavic themes, the fluidity of the movements and the incessant contrasts demonstrate a profound originality of style and form.
Finally, the famous Adagio for strings by the American Samuel Barber, created in 1936, magnifies emotion while favoring simplicity of writing. This is undoubtedly what made it a universal masterpiece that cinema has often used.
