It is difficult to offer a more spontaneously appealing program than this one, which contains the spectacular and playful din of a classical music hit and the equally spectacular novelty of a commission for two orchestras. The Young Person’s guide to the orchestra was composed by Benjamin Britten, then aged 33, for an educational film intended to present a symphony orchestra. Britten deploys a theme by Henry Purcell in as many variations as there are instruments in the group: violin, harp or percussion, everyone plays it.
Pick the day is the result of an order placed by EO41 with Fabien Cali, a self-taught rock and jazz guitarist before being the winner of seven prizes at the Paris Conservatory and a rising star of contemporary music. He is here requested for a work for two orchestras, one professional, the other student, which will therefore be the EO41 and an ensemble of student musicians from Loir-et-Cher. Pedagogy, repertoire work and pure novelty, the music-loving people ask for nothing more.
